Pinellas County Reopens Barrier Islands to Residents and Business Owners

by Ivy

Pinellas County officials announced on Saturday, September 28, that access to beach and barrier island communities has been reinstated for residents, business owners, and employees following the impacts of Hurricane Helene.

To gain entry, individuals must present a valid barrier island re-entry permit—typically obtained prior to hurricane season—or provide photo identification alongside adequate proof of residence or business affiliation. Acceptable forms of verification include vehicle registrations, property tax statements, utility bills, work identification, or recent pay stubs.

However, certain areas remain off-limits: both north and southbound lanes of Gulf Boulevard from 150th Avenue (Tom Stuart Causeway) to 140th Avenue in Madeira Beach, and the same lanes from Park Boulevard Bridge to 196th Avenue (Tiki Gardens County Park) in Indian Shores will continue to be closed.

Officials caution that power outages persist across the islands, rendering traffic lights and signals inoperative. They advise residents and employees to approach each intersection as a four-way stop to ensure safety. Further evaluations for additional openings are scheduled for Sunday.
