From Yard Waste to Nutrient-Rich Soil: Local Business Leads Green Initiative

by Ivy

COLONIE, N.Y. — Each autumn, countless leaves blanket residential lawns, prompting homeowners to rake and dispose of them. For many, these fallen leaves become mere waste, but one local enterprise sees them as an opportunity for sustainability.

Green Renewable, located in Colonie, is transforming discarded leaves into nutrient-rich soil instead of allowing them to fill landfills. This innovative process not only minimizes waste but also contributes positively to the environment.

Sean Gallivan, owner and CEO of Green Renewable, explained, “Currently, green waste cannot be disposed of in landfills due to its potential to break down and damage landfill cells. Our facility serves as an alternative for disposing of this organic material.”

Gallivan elaborated on the sources of the leaves, noting, “We collect leaves from towns, municipalities, and landscapers looking to offload their green waste.”

Upon arrival at Green Renewable’s facility, the yard waste is first ground into smaller pieces before being placed into piles for decomposition. Gallivan shared the process: “We allow the material to age for 90 days. Throughout this period, we take several steps to aerate the piles, which initiates the decomposition process.”

The shredded leaves undergo careful monitoring to ensure optimal breakdown. Gallivan highlighted the result: “This method yields a nutrient-rich soil product. We start with a base product, and a specific percentage of this forms the foundation for various soil mixes.”

Green Renewable produces three distinct soil blends, which are processed and packaged on-site before distribution. Gallivan stated, “Our products reach national markets, where they are sold in department stores and nurseries. We also supply bulk materials in our large dump trucks.”

Through this innovative approach, Green Renewable is making strides in reducing yard waste and promoting eco-friendly practices in the community.
