Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, made history by becoming the first person to surpass a net worth of $US400 billion ($A641.4 billion). Despite holding the title of the world’s richest person since January 2021, Musk’s real estate portfolio tells a different story. His approach to property is far more modest compared to other billionaires like Jeff Bezos or Mark Zuckerberg, who have extensive and luxurious property holdings worldwide.
Elon Musk’s Modest Real Estate Choices
Musk’s most notable property is a humble $50,000 ranch-style home in Boca Chica, Texas, located near his SpaceX Starbase facility. This property is Musk’s official legal residence. Despite owning and selling several properties, including a mansion in Hillsborough, California, and a historic Los Angeles home once owned by Gene Wilder, Musk has become known for his minimalist approach to housing.
In contrast, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has invested in multiple extravagant properties across the U.S., from luxurious estates in Medina, Washington, to a high-security “Billionaire Bunker” on Indian Creek Island in Florida. Bezos’ holdings also include multiple properties in Washington D.C., New York City, Beverly Hills, and Maui, Hawaii, demonstrating a vast and varied real estate portfolio.
Jeff Bezos’ Expansive Property Collection
Bezos’ move to Florida in 2022 was driven partly by tax considerations, saving him hundreds of millions of dollars. He owns several high-end properties, including a $90 million property on Indian Creek Island and a $165 million mansion in Beverly Hills, formerly owned by David Geffen. His latest acquisition includes a $78 million estate in Maui, Hawaii.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Expansive Estates
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has also made significant investments in real estate, particularly in Palo Alto, California, Lake Tahoe, and Hawaii. He and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have acquired multiple properties over the years, including a $30 million investment in surrounding homes in Palo Alto. Zuckerberg’s properties extend to a massive 700-acre estate on Kauai, Hawaii, which they purchased in 2014 for $100 million.
These billionaires’ real estate portfolios reflect their status and varying approaches to luxury living, with some opting for extravagant estates and others embracing minimalist, more restrained choices.
