Tesla has started offering discounts on its new Cybertruck vehicles, signaling a shift in strategy as the electric vehicle (EV) market becomes increasingly competitive. According to listings on Tesla’s website, discounts range up to $1,600 on new Cybertrucks, depending on the vehicle’s configuration. For demo versions of the Cybertruck still in inventory, customers can save as much as $2,600.
These discounts come as production of the angular, unpainted steel pickups slows at Tesla’s factory in Austin, Texas. Tesla began delivering the highly anticipated Cybertruck in 2023, with CEO Elon Musk first unveiling the vehicle in 2019. Although initially priced at around $40,000, the Cybertruck’s base price rose to about $80,000 in 2024.
Slowing Production and Sales
Despite Tesla’s efforts, the Cybertruck has encountered several challenges. It became the fifth best-selling EV in the U.S. last year, surpassing Ford’s Lightning F-150, according to data from Cox Automotive. However, production delays, high pricing, and a series of recalls—most recently Tesla’s sixth recall in 2024 for defective drive inverters—have slowed growth.
Tesla’s overall performance in 2024 saw a slight decline in deliveries, even though global EV demand reached record levels. Full-year U.S. EV sales increased by 7.3% year-over-year, reaching 1.3 million units. Despite this, Tesla’s sales dipped by about 37,000 vehicles. Notably, while Tesla’s Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan maintained their positions as the top-selling EVs, both experienced year-over-year declines in sales. The Cybertruck, with estimated U.S. sales of 38,965 units in 2024, failed to meet expectations as a major growth driver.
Competition in the EV Market
Tesla’s market share has been eroded by new competitive models from a wide array of automakers. The introduction of affordable and innovative EVs from rivals has intensified competition, challenging Tesla’s dominance in the sector.
Apologies and Assistance Amid Wildfires
Recently, Elon Musk issued an apology to California customers for delays in Cybertruck deliveries. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk explained that the trucks were being repurposed as mobile base stations to deliver power and wireless internet through Starlink to areas of Los Angeles affected by devastating wildfires. Musk assured customers that their vehicles would be delivered by the end of the week.
The Road Ahead for Tesla
With the EV landscape becoming more crowded, Tesla’s focus on discounting the Cybertruck and addressing production setbacks highlights the challenges it faces as competition intensifies. While the Cybertruck has made a strong impact in the U.S. market, its future success will depend on Tesla’s ability to resolve production bottlenecks, lower prices, and sustain consumer interest in a rapidly evolving EV market.
