Tesla has paused production on the Model Y lines at its Giga Shanghai facility to prepare for the release of the new “Juniper” update. This planned shutdown will occur from January 22 to February 14, coinciding with the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday, during which many employees typically return to their hometowns.
The closure allows Tesla to optimize the production equipment used for the refreshed Model Y, which is set to undergo its first major update in five years. The new “Juniper” version of the Model Y was officially opened for orders in China on January 10. The company aims to ramp up manufacturing and meet demand for the updated model, with deliveries scheduled to begin in March 2025. Tesla is starting with an initial batch of 50,000 orders placed on the first day of availability, with “Launch Series” variants expected to be the first to ship.
In 2024, the Model Y was the best-selling vehicle in China, surpassing the BYD Qin Plus in December after a significant sales surge. Tesla’s focus on upgrading its equipment at Giga Shanghai underscores its commitment to meeting the growing demand for the updated Model Y. In addition to the Shanghai upgrades, Tesla has already begun producing the Juniper version at its Giga Berlin facility, following necessary upgrades and staff training over the holiday period.
This pause in production is part of Tesla’s broader strategy to stay competitive in the rapidly growing EV market, as the company continues to expand production and adapt to new consumer demands.
