The Tesla Model 3 has encountered a serious rival in the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market, as Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan has edged past it in sales, marking a significant shift in the competitive landscape.
Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, revealed in a recent Weibo post that the company’s SU7 model outpaced Tesla’s Model 3 in December 2024, with Xiaomi selling 25,815 units of the SU7, while Tesla moved approximately 21,046 Model 3 vehicles in the same period.
The Xiaomi SU7 has quickly emerged as a formidable contender in China’s EV market, offering a direct challenge to Tesla’s Model 3. The sedan has been well-received by consumers, prompting Xiaomi to revise its production lines twice in 2024 to keep up with rising demand.
According to sales data, the Xiaomi SU7 and Tesla Model 3 ranked as the 4th and 5th best-selling all-electric vehicles in China for December 2024, respectively. Leading the charge was the budget-friendly BYD Seagull, which dominated sales with 48,754 units sold.
Xiaomi’s plans to strengthen its position in the EV market don’t end with the SU7. The company is set to introduce its YU7 all-electric SUV, which will directly compete with Tesla’s Model Y, signaling that Xiaomi intends to further challenge Tesla’s dominance in the Chinese market with a broader EV lineup.
