Australia’s business events sector is experiencing a strong recovery, with international conferences set to inject over $1 billion into the economy. From space science conventions to pediatric gastroenterology gatherings, the country’s diverse array of events is generating significant economic benefits.
The sector took a severe blow during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving hotels, caterers, and other service providers dependent on high-spending business travellers in a difficult position. While business arrivals are still trailing behind pre-pandemic numbers, Tourism Australia has announced an optimistic forecast, with a growing pipeline of events on the horizon.
Among the upcoming events is the prestigious International Astronautical Congress in Sydney later this year, alongside the Women Deliver gender equality conference scheduled for 2026 in Melbourne.
Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell highlighted the role of the government’s bid funding program in securing these high-profile events. “The bid fund program is empowering Australian businesses to outbid international competition and secure top-tier conferences that deliver substantial economic benefits,” he explained.
The grants available under the program are designed to support the bidding phase for large business events expected to generate more than $3 million in local economic activity.
Melissa Brown, Chief Executive of the Australian Business Events Association, emphasized the broader impact of these events, noting they are essential for driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and creating commercial partnerships. “Business events bring together industry leaders to address complex challenges and stimulate growth across sectors such as academia, healthcare, education, mining, and more,” she said.
As the industry rebounds, these conferences are not only boosting Australia’s economy but also positioning the country as a key player in global business and innovation.
