The city of Fulshear, located in Fort Bend County, is actively working to foster local economic growth by supporting small businesses through a new initiative, investing over $200,000 into its Fast Track program. This program is designed to help entrepreneurs connect with advisors, launch their ventures, and grow their businesses.
Traditionally known as a bedroom community in the Houston area, Fulshear is working to shift its reputation and create more local jobs and business opportunities. The city’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has partnered with The Cannon, a Houston-based business incubator, to facilitate the Fast Track program. The initiative offers monthly luncheons, networking events, and personalized guidance to help business owners take their ideas from concept to reality.
Annel Guadalupe, the director of Fulshear’s EDC, explained that the city’s demographic is unique, with many young families who are financially able to start businesses but might face challenges in navigating entrepreneurship. Fulshear’s diverse population also includes immigrants who are familiarizing themselves with business regulations in a new country, adding another layer of support to those seeking guidance.
“People may not have family or friends here, and we want to be the group ready to support them,” Guadalupe said. “We offer business advice, help entrepreneurs refine their ideas, and make connections within the community.”
The program’s outreach spans a wide range, working with budding entrepreneurs who have yet to launch, as well as established business owners looking to expand. While many economic development initiatives focus on attracting large corporations, Fulshear Fast Track provides a valuable platform for smaller businesses to thrive.
Program managing director Mat Yelvington estimates that around 36 businesses have benefited from direct advisory services since the program’s inception, not including those attending other events. The businesses involved are primarily service-oriented, with a significant number in photography, social media, marketing, and consulting.
Looking ahead, Fulshear aims to launch an angel investment group this year to help local businesses secure additional funding, responding to interest from local investors. Yelvington emphasized the city’s desire to establish itself as a pro-business community both locally and regionally.
“Fulshear wants to be known as a city that fosters business growth and is welcoming to entrepreneurs,” Yelvington said.
