Norway to Finance Ukrainian Gas Purchases, Naftogaz Says

by Ivy

Norway is set to provide financial support for Ukraine’s natural gas purchases, as reported by Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz on Tuesday. This move comes as Ukraine faces increased gas imports amid the ongoing war with Russia, which has severely impacted the country’s energy infrastructure.

The financing is part of a 380 million euro ($400 million) aid package facilitated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The funds are aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s energy security during the conflict.

Roman Chumak, CEO of Naftogaz, expressed his gratitude in a statement, emphasizing the critical importance of this support to maintain the stability of Ukraine’s energy system. “I am grateful to Norway and the EBRD for their continued support and commitment to helping our country,” Chumak stated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy also referenced the gas procurement aid during his nightly video address, noting that it was part of a broader assistance program valued at $3.5 billion.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store affirmed that, alongside military assistance, energy support is crucial for Ukraine. He highlighted that Norway’s contribution, including funding for gas purchases, forms an essential part of the country’s ongoing aid efforts.

In response to Russia’s increasing attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector, Ukraine is expected to import up to 800 million cubic meters of gas from Europe in February and March. These imports are necessary to compensate for a significant reduction in domestic gas production, which has seen a 40% drop due to Russian missile strikes.

Russian attacks, previously focused on Ukraine’s electricity sector, have more recently targeted gas fields, damaging both Naftogaz and private energy company DTEK’s facilities on multiple occasions in February.
