Iranian MPs Impeach Finance Minister Amid Economic Challenges

by Ivy

In a significant move, Iranian lawmakers have impeached Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, Abdolnaser Hemmati, over the country’s ongoing economic difficulties. The impeachment vote, which took place on Sunday, was triggered by issues such as soaring inflation and the rapid depreciation of the national currency.

Hemmati, who had been under increasing scrutiny for his handling of the economy, failed to secure the parliament’s confidence, with 182 out of 273 members voting in favor of his removal, according to the official news agency IRNA.

The impeachment session took place in two stages. During the morning, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian took to the floor to defend his finance minister. Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran’s economic challenges could not be attributed to any one individual, stressing that the country was embroiled in an “economic war” that was more severe than the eight-year war with Iraq (1980-88).

“We admit there are problems, and no one is immune to mistakes,” Pezeshkian stated. “But we are working relentlessly to address the issues facing our people and to overcome these crises.”

Despite the defense, the impeachment vote concluded with Hemmati’s dismissal, marking a pivotal moment in Iran’s ongoing struggle with economic instability.
