The Tasmanian Liberal Government has introduced significant reforms aimed at enhancing the efficiency and accountability of the state’s government-owned businesses. After extensive consultations with stakeholders, the Government has presented a consultation Bill in Parliament, marking the first phase of its legislative overhaul.
Treasurer Guy Barnett emphasized the importance of these reforms in ensuring that government businesses operate in the best interests of Tasmanians. “Our Team Tasmania approach has garnered exciting and proactive feedback from stakeholders, and we will continue to collaborate with them to bring this vision to life,” said Barnett.
The first tranche of legislative reforms is designed to establish a strong framework for state-owned enterprises, aligning them with the goals of the Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future. Barnett reaffirmed that these reforms are critical to improving outcomes for the people of Tasmania.
In addition to the legislative changes, the Government is working on the potential merger of key state-owned entities, including TasPorts, TT-Line, and TasRail. Expert advice is being sought to ensure the best possible governance and board performance, with the Government expecting to receive recommendations by the end of April 2025.
The second tranche of reforms will follow the presentation of the State Budget, with further details to be outlined in due course. Barnett encouraged ongoing public engagement, urging Tasmanians to continue providing feedback throughout the process.
A draft of the Bill will be released for public consultation on March 4, 2025, and will be open for comments over a six-week period.
