Trump Vows to Expand Coal Power in Bid to Counter China’s Economic Edge

by Ivy

U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to authorize the expansion of coal-based electricity production to counter China’s growing economic dominance, especially in the energy-intensive manufacturing sector. In a social media post, Trump announced his intention to ramp up fossil fuel power production, declaring that he would direct his administration to immediately begin producing “beautiful, clean coal.”

While the specifics of Trump’s announcement remain unclear, it follows previous actions in his first term when he sought to reinvigorate the coal industry. In 2017, Trump signed an executive order declaring a national energy emergency, directing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to bolster fossil fuel production and distribution. Coal currently generates around 15% of the electricity in the U.S., a significant decline from over 50% in 2000, largely due to competition from renewable sources and cheap natural gas, coupled with stricter federal regulations.

Trump’s call to revive coal-fired power generation comes amid concerns over China’s economic advantage gained by relying heavily on coal to power its manufacturing sector. China’s coal consumption has soared as the country uses the cheap energy source to fuel the production of goods like solar panels, critical minerals, and semiconductors. As China has emerged as the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, its dominance in clean-energy technology has prompted growing concerns in the U.S., where officials worry that Beijing’s technological edge could undermine American jobs.

The decline in coal-based power plants in the U.S. has led to calls from some quarters to revisit emergency powers to keep struggling coal and nuclear plants open. U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum recently mentioned that the Trump administration was exploring ways to use emergency measures to reverse the closure of coal plants. These moves would echo efforts from Trump’s first term, when the administration explored mechanisms to ensure that coal and nuclear plants continued operating to extend their lifespan.

Environmental groups have raised concerns about the potential public health impacts of coal power, especially in relation to emissions such as mercury and particulate matter. These pollutants are linked to cardiovascular and respiratory problems, and mercury contamination in soil and water is known to have neurotoxic effects.

In contrast, Trump officials and coal advocates argue that maintaining coal-fired power plants could help lower energy costs and provide the necessary power for growing sectors like data centers and artificial intelligence. Additionally, some energy experts believe that coal plants could help stabilize power grids, especially as renewable sources like wind and solar continue to face intermittency challenges.

China’s reliance on coal for energy has contributed to the country’s rapid economic expansion, with its GDP growing from approximately $361 billion in 1990 to about $14.7 trillion in 2020. However, the country’s rising emissions have sparked global environmental concerns. Despite this, China has been a leader in expanding its renewable energy capacity, committing to peak its emissions before the end of the decade.

Trump’s push to revitalize coal power reflects the broader U.S. response to China’s dominance in clean-energy technology and its role as the world’s top emitter. The debate surrounding coal’s future in the U.S. continues to highlight the intersection of energy policy, economic competitiveness, and environmental concerns in an increasingly interconnected world.
