In a noteworthy development, unofficial estimates indicate that Tesla’s Model Y has overtaken the Model 3 in cumulative sales during the fourth quarter, making it the best-selling electric car model in history. While Tesla does not officially disclose model-specific sales figures, unofficial estimates point to the Model Y’s ascendancy in cumulative sales.
At the close of the third quarter, CleanTechnica’s estimates hinted at the Model Y nearing this milestone. The subsequent quarter saw the Model Y surpass the Model 3, securing its position as the leading electric car model in historical sales.
A closer look at the figures reveals that Model 3 cumulative sales increased from 2,165,187 units at the end of Q3 2023 to 2,295,187 units at the end of Q4 2023. In contrast, Model Y cumulative sales rose from 2,162,119 units to 2,493,657 units during the same period. The Model Y’s trajectory in the fourth quarter was inevitable, considering it was merely around 3,000 units shy of the Model 3 at the end of Q3.
Despite Tesla not officially releasing model-by-model sales figures, the data suggests that the Model Y has solidified its lead, setting a precedent that might remain unchallenged for an extended period. In addition to surpassing the Model 3, the Model Y claimed the title of the best-selling car globally in 2023 across all powertrains.

While the rumored $25,000 Tesla model is a candidate, details remain scarce. Some anticipate the Cybertruck, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed reservations about it matching the success of the Model Y or even the Model 3.
