Owners of the Tesla Cybertruck are complaining that their new vehicles are rusting.

Tesla’s much-anticipated Cybertruck, heralded for its futuristic design and stainless steel construction, is facing unexpected scrutiny as reports emerge of rust spots appearing on some vehicles shortly after their debut on the roads.

Despite commanding hefty price tags ranging from $57,390 to $96,390, the Cybertrucks, which hit the streets in December, have prompted complaints from owners who have noticed orange rust spots marring their electric vehicles’ exteriors. Concerned buyers have taken to social media to share images documenting the premature corrosion, with some instances reportedly occurring after exposure to rain.

In a notable absence of official response, Tesla has yet to address inquiries from CBS MoneyWatch regarding these customer grievances.

On Cybertruckownersclub.com, an online forum dedicated to enthusiasts of Tesla’s Cybertruck, a user identified as Raxar shared detailed photos illustrating the emergence of rust spots on his recently acquired vehicle. Raxar recounted being forewarned about the issue by a Tesla advisor during the vehicle’s pickup in February, noting that attempts to remove the spots using dish soap proved futile.

Another forum member, vertigo3pb, echoed similar concerns, revealing the appearance of what he described as “corrosion” on his Cybertruck’s exterior following exposure to rain. Despite the stainless steel’s reputation for durability and resistance to corrosion, these reports raise questions about the Cybertruck’s suitability for inclement weather conditions, particularly considering its unconventional angular design.

In response to these challenges, Tesla offers optional protective measures at an additional cost. For $6,000, customers can opt for a black or white paint film that covers all exterior stainless-steel surfaces, providing an additional layer of defense against scratches and corrosion. Alternatively, a clear paint film is available for $5,000, offering similar protection while maintaining the Cybertruck’s metallic aesthetic.

An unreleased owner’s manual video, leaked online, provides guidance on maintaining the Cybertruck’s appearance, highlighting potential hazards such as oil, tree resin, dead bugs, and road salt as factors that could contribute to cosmetic damage. As Tesla navigates these early challenges with its Cybertruck, attention remains focused on the company’s response and efforts to address customer concerns amid the vehicle’s burgeoning popularity.
