Mark Smail, a distinguished automotive sales executive in Westmoreland County, passed away on Saturday at the age of 62, following a sudden illness during a trip back from Seven Springs Mountain resort.
Smail, a resident of Greensburg, was a passenger in a vehicle when he fell unresponsive. First responders from Donegal Township transported him to Independence Health Frick Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, where he was pronounced dead at 10:59 a.m., according to Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson.
An autopsy conducted on Sunday morning did not reveal the cause of death, with Carson stating that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
As the general manager of Smail Auto Group in Hempfield, Mark Smail played a significant role in the automotive industry in Westmoreland County. His sudden passing has deeply affected the community, with tributes pouring in from various quarters.
His daughter, Taylor Smail, took to Facebook to express her grief, describing her father as “the baddest man on the planet” and expressing shock over his unexpected death. She thanked well-wishers for their support during this difficult time.
Dan DeBone, president and CEO of the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce, expressed his devastation over Smail’s passing, highlighting his contributions as an entrepreneur and community leader. DeBone emphasized Smail’s commitment to giving back to the community, noting that his company’s success was grounded in the trust it garnered from the public.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Smail maintained his commitment to his employees, ensuring that none were laid off during the crisis, according to DeBone.
Funeral arrangements for Mark Smail will be handled by Clement L. Pantalone Funeral Home in Greensburg.
