Smart ring and glasses among ideas Apple reportedly discussed

by Celia

A recent report indicates that Apple has been exploring potential avenues for future wearables, while also considering advancements to its existing AirPods lineup.

According to Bloomberg, the tech giant has discussed the possibility of developing a smart ring, although it’s not actively pursuing this product at the moment. Additionally, Apple is reportedly investigating the feasibility of smart glasses and the integration of tiny cameras into AirPods, potentially leveraging AI capabilities.

This speculation aligns with previous indications from Apple’s patent filings, which have showcased concepts for smart glasses and rings dating back over a decade. Notably, past patents have depicted ring designs featuring touchscreen displays, processors, wireless connectivity, and rechargeable batteries, resembling miniature versions of the Apple Watch.

However, it’s essential to note that obtaining a patent does not guarantee the eventual production of a device.

Regarding smart glasses, Apple’s exploration appears to be in an early stage, labeled as a “technology investigation” phase by the company’s hardware engineers, as per the Bloomberg report.

If Apple were to proceed with either the smart ring or glasses, it would enter a competitive landscape. Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which boast AI functionalities such as video recording and streaming, have reportedly exceeded sales expectations, according to Mark Zuckerberg.

Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly looking into enhancing its AirPods range. One project, codenamed B798, involves testing low-resolution cameras on earbuds similar in size to current AirPods. The integration of such cameras could enable AI-driven features to assist users in tracking daily activities and optimizing routines.

Apple has yet to respond to inquiries regarding these developments.

Despite the current absence of plans for a smart ring, some Apple employees are said to be enthusiastic about the concept, particularly as a cost-effective means to encourage health and fitness tracking among individuals who do not wear an Apple Watch.

In this arena, Apple would potentially compete with devices like Oura and Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy smart ring, slated for release later this year. Samsung recently teased its smart ring in a video presentation, although specific details about its functionalities remain limited.
