Skeyes Unveils Digital Tower Test Centre in Belgium, Partnering with Saab

by Ivy

Belgium’s air traffic management takes a leap forward as Skeyes, the country’s air traffic service provider, introduces its state-of-the-art Digital Tower Test Centre in Steenokkerzeel. This milestone is the result of a collaboration with Saab, a leading technology provider in the aerospace industry.

The Digital Tower Test Centre serves as a precursor to the development of a digital control center planned for Namur, Belgium, scheduled to become operational in 2026. Powered by Saab’s Remote Tower (r-TWR) solution, this innovative center will remotely oversee air traffic operations at Charleroi and Liège airports, which are situated 100 kilometers apart.

A notable achievement facilitated by Saab is the integration of an airport surveillance and Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) functionality into the digital tower concept. This capability enables precise tracking of aircraft movements, even in adverse weather conditions, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

In addition to its partnership with Skeyes in Namur, Saab is actively involved in the development of digital control centers in Flanders, Belgium. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to modernizing air traffic management infrastructure and ensuring the safety and efficiency of airspace utilization.
