Fear of Cancer Dominates Health Concerns, Survey Finds

by Ivy

A recent survey reveals that cancer is the leading health concern among UK adults, overshadowing other serious conditions like dementia and heart disease. Conducted by Public First on behalf of the University of Cambridge, the poll surveyed over 2,000 adults, with results released on July 15. Two-thirds of respondents expressed significant worry about receiving a cancer diagnosis, more than any other medical condition.

Despite a notable decline in cancer mortality rates over recent decades in the UK and the US, the fear of cancer remains prevalent. Lilian Rodriguez, a social work counselor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, explained that cancer is often mentally associated with death. “This perception is deeply ingrained, making the idea of cancer particularly frightening for many individuals,” she noted.

Several factors contribute to this widespread fear. Jordie Poncy, a clinical psychologist at Moffitt Cancer Center, highlighted that many people know someone affected by cancer and are aware of its profound impact. The visibility of cancer treatments on social media and news stories also plays a role. “People diagnosed with cancer often must undergo life-changing treatments, such as surgery or chemotherapy, which are associated with unpleasant side effects and can disrupt normal routines,” Poncy said.

The perceived lack of control over cancer risk exacerbates this fear. Hillary Ammon, a clinical psychologist at the Center for Anxiety & Women’s Emotional Wellness, pointed out that the aggressiveness of certain cancers and the increasing rates of cancer among younger people contribute to its perceived threat. Media portrayals of cancer further keep the disease at the forefront of people’s minds.

Managing Cancer-Related Anxiety

Managing the fear of a cancer diagnosis begins with acknowledging its validity, according to Rodriguez. Many people have personal or indirect experiences with cancer, making the fear feel personal. Ammon emphasized the importance of understanding the root of one’s fear. “When working with clients struggling with health anxiety related to cancer, we often explore their greatest fears and what is within and out of their control,” she said.

Changing how one thinks about cancer is crucial, Poncy advised. Focusing on proactive steps to reduce cancer risk, such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and getting recommended screenings, can help manage anxiety. “By being proactive, you can help reduce anxiety and take control of your health without letting fear dominate your life,” Rodriguez added.

Developing healthy coping skills is also essential. This includes talking to others about your fears and having a solid support system. It’s important to recognize when anxiety may be turning into a struggle, marked by behaviors like excessive body checking or avoiding medical care.

If anxiety about health interferes with daily life, seeking help from a mental health professional is advisable. “If you find anxiety about health is interfering with your ability to thrive in various aspects of your life such as relationships, work, or personal activities,” Poncy said, “it may be helpful to speak to a mental health professional to gain additional support and coping skills.”

Ultimately, acknowledging the fear and taking proactive steps can help manage anxiety related to cancer, enabling individuals to maintain control over their health and well-being.
