Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have officially announced their separation after two years of marriage, as confirmed by a recent filing in the Los Angeles Superior Court.
Lopez filed for the dissolution of their marriage on Tuesday in Los Angeles, a date that coincides with the second anniversary of their wedding ceremony in Riceboro, Georgia, in 2022. The couple initially eloped in Las Vegas a month before their Georgia celebration.
The split follows a period of reported turbulence in their relationship, with the two stars allegedly living apart, Lopez canceling her summer tour to focus on family, and the couple putting their Beverly Hills home on the market.
CNN has reached out to both Lopez and Affleck’s representatives for comment, but neither has responded as of yet.
This divorce brings to a close yet another chapter in the high-profile love story between Lopez and Affleck, a relationship that has captured public attention for decades.
Lopez and Affleck first met over 20 years ago on the set of the 2003 film “Gigli,” where they portrayed criminals on a job and formed a real-life bond that soon blossomed into romance. Their relationship has since experienced numerous twists and turns, including marriages to other partners and the formation of families.
However, in 2021, the couple rekindled their romance, much to the delight of their fans who had long followed the saga of “Bennifer.” The couple seemed genuinely happy to be back together.
In December 2021, Affleck spoke to The Wall Street Journal about his life with Lopez, expressing a deep sense of fulfillment. “My life now reflects not just the person that I want to be, but the person that I really feel like I am – which is not perfect, but somebody who tries very hard and cares very much about being honest and authentic and accountable,” he said.
The couple’s original engagement dates back to November 2002, when Affleck proposed with a custom 6.1-carat pink diamond ring from Harry Winston. He also starred alongside Lopez in the music video for her hit single “Jenny from the Block,” which highlighted the intense media scrutiny they faced.
Despite their deep connection, the pair postponed their wedding, scheduled for September 2003, citing overwhelming media attention. By January 2004, they had officially ended their relationship.
Their reunion in 2021 was a fairytale comeback, with the couple going Instagram official just months after Lopez ended her engagement to former baseball star Alex Rodriguez. In April 2022, Affleck proposed to Lopez for a second time.
Lopez expressed her joy about their reunion in an interview with People magazine, calling it “a beautiful love story that we got a second chance.”
In 2024, Lopez released a documentary titled “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” which chronicled her journey of self-love and the creation of her independently produced album “This Is Me… Now.” In the documentary, Affleck discussed how he learned to “compromise” with Lopez regarding her desire to be more open about their private lives.
Recently, however, the couple has been seen leading separate lives, with Lopez celebrating her birthday in July with a Bridgerton-themed party, notably without Affleck in attendance.
Lopez shares two children with ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Affleck is the father of three children with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner.
