Angelina Jolie experienced a deeply emotional moment at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday during the premiere of her latest film, “Maria.” The Oscar-winning actress was greeted with a rapturous and extended applause following the screening, leaving her visibly moved as she descended a theater staircase, wiping away tears.
Jolie stars as the legendary opera singer Maria Callas in the biopic, which portrays Callas’ tumultuous life and final days in 1970s Paris. Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film has already sparked early Oscar buzz following its Venice debut. Larraín, known for his acclaimed biopics “Jackie” and “Spencer,” was present at the premiere alongside cast members Alba Rohrwacher and Pierfrancesco Favino.
During a press conference earlier in the day, Jolie shared that she found unexpected parallels between herself and Callas, particularly in their shared vulnerability. “I share her vulnerability more than anything,” Jolie said, noting how Callas struggled with the world’s lack of space for her softness and emotional openness.
In addition to its festival success, “Maria” is set to reach a wider audience, with Netflix announcing that the film will be available on the platform at a later date.
