The highly anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic “Beetlejuice” hits theaters this weekend, bringing with it a dose of old magic and new faces.
Tim Burton returns to direct, with Michael Keaton reprising his iconic role as the mischievous demon Beetlejuice. Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder also return, playing Delia and Lydia Deetz, respectively. However, it was Jenna Ortega’s addition to the cast that played a crucial role in bringing the sequel to fruition.
In a recent interview with CNN, O’Hara explained that the sequel’s development was delayed until Ortega, who plays Astrid—Ryder’s daughter and O’Hara’s granddaughter—joined the cast. O’Hara remarked that Ortega’s emergence as a talented actress and Burton’s inspiration from her role were pivotal in moving the sequel forward.
Ortega, who was born 15 years after the original film’s release, only watched the 1988 classic as a child in the mid-2010s. Despite this, she was seen as the perfect addition to the long-awaited sequel. Ortega recounted that Burton offered her the role during their collaboration on the Netflix series “Wednesday,” which, like “Beetlejuice,” explores dark and whimsical themes. She described how Burton presented the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” script to her during their “Wednesday” meetings, making the decision to join the project almost instantaneous after reading it.
Returning to their roles from the 1980s, Ryder and O’Hara spoke of their excitement about re-entering the “Beetlejuice” universe. Ryder praised Burton for creating a unique genre blend that combines elements of thriller and comedy, while O’Hara found it thrilling to return to a world Burton crafted with such distinctive energy.
Ortega, who considers O’Hara a “comedy legend,” spoke highly of Ryder’s ability to convey honesty and vulnerability while maintaining an enigmatic presence. She expressed admiration for both actresses and the opportunity to work with them.
Given that it took over three decades to produce the sequel, speculation about a third installment remains distant. However, all three actresses expressed willingness to return if Burton decides to develop a third film. O’Hara humorously commented on the possibility of a third film, saying, “Yeah, I’d like to be alive in 30 years!”
For now, fans can enjoy the magic of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” hoping that the spirit of the ghost with the most continues to enchant for years to come.
