Rapper Rich Homie Quan Dies at 33, Leaving Lasting Legacy in Atlanta’s Hip-Hop Scene

Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, best known for his 2013 hit “Type of Way,” has passed away at the age of 33, according to a statement from the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, died on Thursday at Grady Memorial Hospital, confirmed Jimmy Sadler, senior investigator with the Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, but no details regarding the cause of death have been released.

Rich Homie Quan played a pivotal role in popularizing Atlanta’s trap music, helping to bring the city’s distinctive sound to the mainstream. He became widely recognized for his melodic style, as showcased in his breakout single “Type of Way” and the 2014 hit “Lifestyle,” a collaboration with Young Thug and Birdman under the collective Rich Gang. “Lifestyle” achieved platinum status, propelling both Quan and Young Thug into the national spotlight.

In 2015, Quan released “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” another major hit that cemented his place in hip-hop. The song’s music video became iconic, inspiring the viral dance move known as “Hit the Quan,” which gained massive popularity on social media platforms like Vine.

Quan was slated to perform later this month at Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out Live: The Final Lap tour in Atlanta, alongside artists like Waka Flocka Flame, Nardo Wick, and Boosie.

Following the news of his death, tributes poured in from fellow musicians. Rapper Meek Mill, who worked with Quan on a remix of “Type of Way,” posted a heartfelt message on his Instagram story, saying, “RIP Rich Homie Quan. Prayers to his family.”

Rapper 2Chainz, who recently collaborated with Quan on a track titled “Ah’chi,” shared that the two had just discussed filming a music video together.

In a July interview with Revolt, Quan reflected on how he wanted to be remembered: “Remember me as an original. As an artist who did it his way. A hard kid from Atlanta with a dream, who believed in himself and bettered himself—and won.”
