Valdosta, Ga. (WALB) — Business owners in Valdosta are facing significant challenges as they navigate the destruction left behind by Hurricane Helene, which recently swept through the area.
In the wake of the storm, many local enterprises are dealing with power outages, debris-laden streets, and damage to their structures. Amid these obstacles, they are determined to restore the community they cherish.
“We are just trying to make sure everyone gets fed. If you need food, we are going to feed you today. Definitely come see me,” said Nick Harden, a Valdosta City Councilman and owner of Big Nick’s Barbecue.
Harden recognizes the dire circumstances faced by residents and has stepped up to support his community. Since the hurricane struck, he has been collecting donations and preparing meals for those without power or essential resources.
“Kenny Moore, who plays for the Indianapolis Colts, is from Valdosta. He generously contributed a substantial amount of money and meals. Thanks to him, we will be able to provide for many families,” Harden shared.
With power restored and his restaurant mostly intact, Harden considers himself fortunate compared to other local business owners who are grappling with severe damage.
In downtown Valdosta, numerous storefronts have been devastated, and power outages persist. Some business owners are worried they may not be able to reopen due to extensive destruction.
“It shattered our front window and broke all the windows in the back. We are facing water damage, and, of course, we have no power. I don’t think anyone in the area has power. We also have some damage to the flooring and walls,” reported business owner Toni Miller.
Additionally, amidst the wreckage, business owners must remain vigilant against scams and price gouging.
Attorney General Chris Carr has issued a warning to both residents and business owners to be cautious when hiring repair services during this vulnerable time.
“This is a period when, unfortunately, individuals may come to exploit those affected by the storm, whether it be for debris removal, tree cutting, or home repairs,” Carr stated.
Harden offered words of encouragement to his fellow business owners, saying, “We’ve got to stick together. We will get through this. Support is on the way.”
Before hiring any repair services, residents are urged to conduct thorough research to ensure they are selecting reputable companies that prioritize their clients’ needs.
