Thailand’s Tourism Minister Urges Business Support for Country’s Entertainment Complex

by Ivy

Thailand’s Tourism Minister, Sorawong Thienthong, is calling on the country’s business leaders to back the government’s ambitious plans for a large-scale entertainment complex. The project, he emphasizes, is much more than just a casino—it is a multifaceted development designed to boost tourism and attract international investments.

Speaking at the “ASEAN Economic Outlook 2025” event, held in celebration of the 37th anniversary of Krungthep Turakij newspaper, Sorawong, who also serves as the secretary-general of the Pheu Thai Party, underscored that this initiative could help Thailand regain its position as a major economic force in Asia. He envisions Thailand as “the fifth tiger of Asia,” with the entertainment complex serving as a crucial driver of this transformation.

Sorawong made it clear that the project’s scope extends well beyond gambling. “To think of this project as just a casino is missing the bigger picture,” he stated. The envisioned complex would feature amusement parks, restaurants, bars, game centers, and department stores, creating a diverse tourism appeal aimed at both local and international visitors.

Despite political opposition to the project, Sorawong urged the private sector to step in and voice their support. He stressed that business community involvement is vital for the project’s success. “I ask the business community to speak up. Their involvement is crucial to bringing this vision to life,” he said.

The entertainment complex project has already undergone public consultations led by the Fiscal Policy Office, with the next step being a formal proposal to the Cabinet for review. Sorawong views this as a pivotal moment for Thailand’s tourism sector, suggesting the development could become a landmark destination for the country.

Additionally, Sorawong hinted at Thailand’s broader plans to strengthen its global profile in the coming years. He pointed out that 2025 will be a significant year for the country, as it prepares to host major events like the 33rd Southeast Asian Games and the Thailand Grand Prix in Buriram.

While optimistic about the project’s potential, Sorawong reiterated the importance of support from Thailand’s private sector. “These developments will not materialize without the business community’s full support,” he concluded.

Thailand’s long-term goal with this initiative is to reestablish itself as an economic powerhouse in Asia, hoping to once again be counted alongside the “Four Asian Tigers”—Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.
