Regional Entities Vote on Proposed Business Park in Georgetown

by Ivy

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (LEX 18) – Six regional entities are set to vote on an interlocal agreement regarding a proposed business park in Georgetown. The vote is expected to take place within the next week, according to Erin Hsu, a local resident and member of the Facebook group Friends of Great Crossing.

The business park’s planned location is a 500-acre parcel of agricultural land situated off McClelland Circle. Hsu expressed her opposition to the project, emphasizing the potential negative impact on the community. “As a working mom with young kids in the schools, it seems like a waste to take a 500-acre piece of property right in the middle of a school corridor and turn it into an industrial park,” she remarked. Hsu believes the area needs more family and recreational activities rather than industrial development.

Scott County Executive Joe Pat Covington countered Hsu’s concerns, highlighting the potential economic benefits of the park. “What about the 1,400 jobs that could be created, with an average salary of $70,000?” Covington asked. His comments followed the Fiscal Court’s approval of the interlocal agreement on October 11.

Covington noted that the park aligns with the county’s comprehensive plan, aiming to attract diverse and high-paying businesses to the region. “The goal is to have products that we can use to draw in new businesses and improve job opportunities for our community,” he stated.

Despite the support from some officials, Hsu remains concerned about the urgency of moving forward with the plan, especially amid the current funding opportunities through the Kentucky Product Development Initiative.

The voting timeline for the interlocal agreement is as follows: Berea approved the agreement on Monday, Madison County is set to vote on Tuesday, the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government will address it on Thursday, and the Georgetown City Council will vote on October 28. The estimated costs for the site are approximately $37.87 million, planned in a two-phase approach.
