BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – In recent weeks, KBTX has covered notable recalls from Hyundai and Honda, highlighting the automotive industry’s ongoing safety concerns. The latest recall affects approximately 700,000 Honda vehicles, which are at risk of catching fire.
Professor Alina Sorescu from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University provided insight into the nature of vehicle recalls during an interview with KBTX. She explained that recalls can be classified into two categories: voluntary and involuntary.
“Companies often monitor warranty claims and repair requests at their dealerships. When they notice a consistent pattern of issues, they may opt for a voluntary recall to prevent serious accidents,” Sorescu stated. “Conversely, an involuntary recall is initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) when they identify a pattern of safety concerns.”
To stay informed about potential recalls, Sorescu advises consumers to remain vigilant about product registrations. “It’s crucial to register any product you purchase, be it a car or a toaster. Manufacturers will contact you regarding recalls if your registration is current,” she emphasized.
With the automotive industry facing increasing scrutiny over safety, Sorescu’s insights underscore the importance of proactive measures to ensure consumer safety and awareness.
