Tesla’s Giga Shanghai has been honored with the title of “Green Supply Chain Management Company of the Year” by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), a recognition that underscores the electric vehicle maker’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Grace Tao, Tesla’s Vice President, highlighted the facility’s environmental initiatives, noting that Giga Shanghai is not only one of the most productive factories in the company’s global network but also a model of eco-friendly manufacturing. Tesla’s efforts to minimize its environmental impact at the Shanghai site are showcased through several innovative systems designed to promote sustainability.
Among the key features celebrated by the MIIT is Giga Shanghai’s highly efficient water recycling model. The factory recycles approximately 98% of the water it uses, which amounts to over 400,000 tons of water annually. Tao also pointed to a unique aspect of the factory’s operations—a large fish tank that houses koi fish, living in water that has been treated from the factory’s wastewater. This initiative serves as a tangible example of how Tesla is integrating sustainable practices into its day-to-day operations.
Tesla’s Giga Shanghai is far from being the company’s largest facility in terms of physical size. However, it holds the distinction of being the highest-output factory in Tesla’s global fleet. In the company’s Q3 2024 Update Letter, Tesla reported that Giga Shanghai is capable of producing over 950,000 vehicles annually, a record for the automaker.
The facility is dedicated exclusively to the production of Tesla’s Model Y crossover and Model 3 sedan, making it a critical part of the company’s global manufacturing strategy. Beyond serving domestic markets, Giga Shanghai is Tesla’s main export hub. The factory’s vehicles have been shipped worldwide, from Europe to the Asia-Pacific region, and to countries such as Australia and New Zealand. In a milestone achievement, Tesla China celebrated the export of its 1 millionth vehicle from Giga Shanghai in late September 2024.
Tesla’s efforts at Giga Shanghai continue to set the bar for sustainable manufacturing practices, blending high-output production with environmentally responsible processes. The recognition by the MIIT further cements the facility’s role as a leader in green supply chain management within the global automotive industry.
