Tesla’s latest Model Y variant, the “Juniper,” has taken China by storm, receiving a staggering 50,000 orders on its launch day, January 10, 2025. The news was confirmed by Chinese auto blogger Zhang San Jiao Xing Jian Zhe, who reported that this impressive figure was achieved within hours of the car’s debut. A Tesla store salesperson in China further revealed that their location alone received nearly 300 reservations, with some stores seeing individual order volumes surpassing 100 units.
The new Model Y is offered in two trims: a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version priced at ¥263,500 (approximately $35,950) and a long-range all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant costing ¥303,500 (about $41,400). Official deliveries are expected to begin in March 2025, but customers placing reservations now will face a wait time of up to several months, with some being told to expect delivery in April or May.
The strong demand for the Juniper edition seems to be driven by a combination of factors, including competitive pricing and improvements over previous models. Despite the ongoing availability of the older Model Y at a discounted price, the new release has garnered significant attention, with many customers opting for the latest version.
A post on Tesla China’s Weibo account announcing the launch saw over 100,000 views within just five minutes, indicating the massive interest in the vehicle. The launch also sparked heated discussions on Weibo, with the hashtag “New Model Y, despite the comparison” trending shortly after the announcement. Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi, even responded to the buzz, with a simple “OK” post, tagging Xiaomi’s YU7, further fueling speculation about the broader implications of Tesla’s new model on the Chinese automotive landscape.
