Tesla Model Y Tops Sales in China for 2024, Marking a Strong Finish

by Ivy

In a remarkable achievement, the Tesla Model Y became the best-selling car in China for 2024, with a total of 480,309 units sold throughout the year. This milestone was reported by China EV DataTracker, underscoring Tesla’s continued success in the world’s largest automotive market.

Despite facing a global decline in sales, particularly in Europe, the Model Y’s performance in China was a standout. While the demand for this electric crossover dropped by significant margins in markets like Norway, Iceland, and Luxembourg—27%, 87%, and 31% respectively—the Chinese market saw the opposite trend. Sales of the Model Y surged in China, possibly driven by the anticipation of the newly refreshed “Juniper” variant set to launch in early 2025.

Tesla’s Strong December Performance

The sales figures for the Model Y in China reflect a strong finish to 2024. In December alone, Tesla sold 61,881 units of the Model Y, a performance only surpassed by two previous months: November 2022 (69,098 units) and August 2022 (62,169 units). For the full year, the Model Y’s sales were up 5.24% compared to 2023, with 480,309 units sold, a notable increase from 456,394 units the previous year.

Tesla’s success came just as the BYD Qin Plus sedan, which had been ahead in sales until November, came in a close second with 480,025 units sold in 2024—only 284 fewer units than the Model Y.

Marketing and Features Boost Sales

A range of factors likely contributed to Tesla’s sales surge in China. The company’s marketing initiatives, including highlighting Tesla’s impeccable safety record (with no recalls in six years), may have helped reinforce consumer confidence. Additionally, the introduction of the Model Y’s smart summon feature and a reduction in final payment costs for Chinese buyers played a role in attracting more customers to Tesla’s showrooms.

The Launch of the Tesla Model Y “Juniper”

On January 10, 2025, Tesla unveiled the much-anticipated Model Y “Juniper” in China. This refreshed version of the popular electric crossover comes with a new exterior design, improved aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of just 0.22 Cd, and a larger 100-liter trunk. With a price range between 263,500 yuan (approximately 39,950 USD) and 303,500 yuan (41,400 USD), the Juniper variant is expected to build on the success of its predecessor.

Tesla received 50,000 orders for the new model on its launch day alone, marking an impressive start. Deliveries of the Model Y “Juniper” are scheduled to begin in March 2025, and its introduction is expected to further solidify Tesla’s dominance in the Chinese electric vehicle market.

As Tesla continues to innovate and expand its presence, the Model Y remains a flagship product in China’s rapidly growing electric vehicle sector, where competition from local manufacturers like BYD continues to intensify.
