Tesla is recalling approximately 239,382 vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the rearview cameras, triggered by a malfunctioning circuit board. The recall impacts certain 2024 and 2025 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y vehicles, as well as select 2023 models.
The issue, discovered by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), involves a short circuit in the computer circuit board that may cause the rearview camera image to fail. Rearview cameras have been a mandatory safety feature in all vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada since May 2018, and failure to comply with this regulation violates federal motor vehicle safety standards, prompting the recall.
Tesla has taken swift action to address the problem, issuing a free over-the-air (OTA) software update for affected vehicles. However, the company is also identifying cars that have already experienced circuit board failure or are at risk of such failure. These vehicles will receive free replacement of the faulty computer boards. Recall notifications will be sent to affected U.S. owners in early March.
While Transport Canada has not yet issued a similar recall, there may be updates on Canadian vehicles soon. In January 2024, a smaller recall was issued in Canada for 1,172 Tesla cars, addressing a software issue that could affect rearview camera functionality. The problem was resolved through an OTA update.
Tesla’s recall is part of a broader trend in the auto industry, with several other manufacturers also facing issues related to rearview cameras. In 2024, recalls were issued for over 126,000 Stellantis vehicles, 15,000 Ford trucks, and 656 Toyota Crown sedans in Canada alone, all due to rearview camera malfunctions. In the U.S., Hyundai recalled 225,000 vehicles for similar reasons.
If you’re a Tesla owner concerned about whether your vehicle is affected, you can visit Tesla’s recall page or contact customer service. You can also check the Transport Canada recall database or reach out to the customer service department of your vehicle’s brand. To receive recall notices, ensure that your address is registered with the automaker, especially if you’ve recently moved or purchased a used vehicle.
This recall serves as a reminder of the ongoing importance of vehicle safety features and the steps automakers take to address emerging issues swiftly.
