Tesla Scales Down Cybertruck Production Amid Slowing Demand

by Ivy

Tesla has made a surprising decision to scale down production of its highly anticipated but polarizing electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck. This move comes after a year of fluctuating demand and significant changes in production strategy at the Austin Gigafactory in Texas.

A Shifting Focus: Workers Transition to Model Y Production

According to a recent report by Business Insider, Tesla has moved workers from the Cybertruck assembly line to Model Y production in response to a drop in Cybertruck demand. This transition, which was communicated to workers in December 2024, highlights the company’s efforts to adapt to its changing production needs. The company’s approach to adjusting schedules and workforce allocations, while not unusual for larger manufacturers like Ford or Stellantis, is a relatively new practice for Tesla.

In Tesla’s case, the shift is partly motivated by the higher profit margins associated with the Model Y, which has proven to be one of Tesla’s most popular and profitable models. Workers were notified that production schedules for both the Cybertruck and Model Y would be adjusted, with a noticeable reduction in the number of Cybertrucks being built during the first quarter of 2025.

While the move is seen as necessary to meet Tesla’s business needs, some workers were reportedly disappointed by the switch. Many expressed a preference for continuing to work on the Cybertruck, but others were “forced” to transition to the Model Y teams. This restructuring reflects a growing emphasis on the more established Model Y, which continues to drive Tesla’s sales.

Cybertruck’s Performance and Market Shifts

Despite initially sparking significant hype, the Cybertruck’s market performance has been underwhelming, especially after its official release in 2024. After the delivery event in November 2023, secondary market prices soared, with some units even fetching six-figure prices. However, these inflated values quickly deflated as the novelty wore off, and many Cybertrucks started accumulating in inventory.

In 2024, Tesla delivered around 27,000 Cybertrucks, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While the vehicle has been successful in some areas — notably being the best-selling electric pickup in the U.S. in Q2 2024 — demand appears to have softened. Despite being the third-best-selling EV in the U.S. in Q3 2024, its appeal seems to be fading, with many potential buyers bypassing reservation systems and opting for immediate deliveries.

Signs of Softening Demand

Several indicators suggest that the Cybertruck’s hype has plateaued. The availability of deals such as $899 per month leases and the ability to bypass reservation holders to order directly are seen as signs of weak demand, according to industry experts like Tom Libby, Associate Director of Industry Analysis at S&P Global Mobility.

Additionally, used Cybertrucks are reportedly sitting on car lots longer, with some vehicles remaining unsold for an average of 75 days. As Kevin Roberts, Director of Economic and Market Intelligence at CarGurus, noted, “The number of days they’re sitting is getting longer, and the price is coming down,” signaling a decrease in sales volume.

The Road Ahead for the Cybertruck

Despite these challenges, Tesla remains committed to the Cybertruck, a key component of its future lineup. However, the latest production adjustments suggest that the company may be reassessing its priorities as it faces a shift in consumer demand.

With the Model Y continuing to drive Tesla’s growth, and the Cybertruck struggling to maintain its initial momentum, it remains to be seen how the company will balance production between these two vehicles moving forward. The Cybertruck, once seen as a game-changer in the electric pickup market, may need to undergo further strategic shifts if it is to capture the market Tesla had originally envisioned for it.
