Apple Brings Back Repeating Operation Feature in iOS 18.3 Calculator App

by Ivy

In a welcome move for users, Apple is reintroducing one of the most popular features from the previous iOS Calculator app: repeating operations. This feature, which allows users to repeat the last performed calculation by pressing the equal sign, was notably absent from the iOS 18 update last fall, frustrating many users.

The repeating operations feature was a handy tool for performing tasks like calculating compounding interest or executing long series of repeating additions. With it, users could enter a calculation (e.g., 2×2), hit the equal sign to get the result (4), and pressing it again would repeat the operation (resulting in 8, 16, and so on).

This functionality was removed with iOS 18 and macOS 15, sparking some user complaints. However, with the upcoming release of iOS/iPadOS 18.3 and macOS 15.3 betas, the feature is back. Users can now once again press the equal sign repeatedly to perform the same operation over and over. This update is expected to roll out to all users in late January or early February 2025.

In addition to the return of this popular feature, iOS 18 introduced a revamped Calculator app, with new tools like Math Notes for scribbling calculations and unit conversions for things like currency and weight. The app also made its debut on the iPad with a unified interface across platforms, offering a more streamlined experience for users across Apple devices.

For many, the return of the repeating operation function will be a long-awaited enhancement that improves productivity and makes everyday calculations a little easier.
