A new survey has revealed that over half (56%) of Australian workers are considering relocating within the next year, which could have significant implications for real estate agents. Conducted by recruitment specialists Robert Walters, the survey of more than 7,750 white-collar professionals highlights key factors driving this mobility, with notable consequences for the real estate sector.
High Rates of Interstate Migration
Among those looking to relocate, 54% are considering moving interstate within Australia. Key motivators include:
- Higher salaries (48%)
- Better job opportunities (22%)
- Lower cost of living (13%)
- Improved work-life balance (13%)
“While major cities like Sydney and Melbourne offer attractive salaries, their high cost of living is prompting more people to consider cities like Brisbane and Perth,” said Robert Walters Australia and New Zealand CEO Shay Peters. These cities are viewed as offering a more affordable lifestyle, better work-life balance, and less congestion—important factors for skilled professionals seeking a change.
Economic Pressures and Strategic Relocations
The rising cost of living is no longer just a preference for many; it’s a financial necessity. The decision of where to live has become a strategic one, with many workers choosing locations where they can earn a competitive income without spending a large portion of it on daily expenses.
“This shift in priorities is shaping the way professionals evaluate potential moves,” Peters explained. “Higher salaries, coupled with a more affordable lifestyle, are the key drivers behind this relocation trend.”
International Mobility: An Opportunity for Australian Employers
The survey also sheds light on trends affecting New Zealand, where 42% of workers are looking to move to Australia. In contrast, only 2% of Australians are interested in relocating to New Zealand. This presents a challenge for the New Zealand job market, but also an opportunity for Australian businesses to tap into a larger talent pool from across the Tasman.
Implications for Real Estate Agents
For real estate agents, this workforce mobility means an increase in interstate property transactions. As employees move for better job prospects, agents will see more demand for relocations to cities offering affordable living and competitive salaries, like Brisbane and Perth.
Agents who are able to offer relocation services—providing tailored advice, interstate expertise, and even virtual property tours—will be in a strong position to meet this rising demand.
“Relocation has evolved from a personal growth strategy to a key component in managing one’s career,” said Peters. Real estate agents who can capitalize on this shift by assisting clients with interstate moves will find themselves better positioned to thrive in a changing market.
