MEDINA — Exciting changes may soon be coming to the Lake Medina property as the Medina Finance Committee advanced a request for council action on Monday. These improvements are part of a broader plan proposed by the Medina County Park District to enhance the area for residents and visitors.
On January 29, Medina County Park District Executive Director Nate Eppink sent a letter to Medina Law Director Greg Huber detailing proposed upgrades near the pump house and the Granger Road entrance to Lake Medina. Eppink referred to a 2002 lease agreement between the city and the Medina County Park District, which governs the use of the land within city limits. According to Huber, the proposed improvements align with the terms of this lease, and he recommended passing a resolution to allow the park district to proceed with the plans.
The Medina Public Properties Committee previously met in late October, where Eppink presented the district’s plans for the park. He highlighted that the park spans over 230 acres, a size that has grown in recent years due to acquisitions and donations. The property includes a 105-acre lake, which is popular for fishing and canoeing, along with several miles of trails.
The park currently has two public entrances: one on Medina Road (3751 Medina Road) and another on Granger Road (3733 Granger Road). Some of the proposed improvements for 2025 include:
- Adding a picnic shelter at the Granger Road entrance.
- Enhancing the upper trail with additional stone.
- Building stairs where visitors have worn a path.
- Installing a semi-permanent mural on the pump house.
- Creating a kayak launch and fishing platform.
Additionally, Eppink discussed plans for Shotwell Gardens, a 25-acre area donated to the park by the Shotwell family. The gardens will include a third park entrance, asphalt trails, parking for 40-50 cars, a small amphitheater with seating for 50-60 people, and mowed lawns for visitors to relax with blankets and chairs. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2025, with the first phase of Shotwell Gardens slated for completion and opening in November 2025.
At the Medina Finance Committee meeting on Monday, Eppink further proposed the installation of security cameras at Lake Medina. However, City Council President John Coyne emphasized the need to determine the locations for the cameras before moving forward with the proposal.
Mayor Dennis Hanwell noted that he would work with Eppink to revise the letter to ensure all proposed improvements were included before the City Council’s approval on February 24, 2025.
