Algeria Seeks Strengthened Ties with Vietnam Through Investment and Trade Partnerships

by Ivy

A recent trade mission organized by the Vietnam Trade Office in Algeria, which took place from February 22 to 25, aimed to enhance economic and investment relations between the two nations. The delegation visited Ghardaia province, located 600 kilometers south of Algiers, to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation in various sectors including textiles, agriculture, refrigeration equipment, logistics, and tourism.

The visit included a seminar, co-hosted by the Vietnam Trade Office and Ghardaia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which focused on promoting trade and investment opportunities. Ghardaia, home to two industrial zones and UNESCO World Heritage sites, is seen as a promising hub for manufacturing, tourism, and export development. The Chamber highlighted the region’s openness to foreign investment, offering attractive incentives such as tax exemptions and land leasing benefits for enterprises looking to establish a presence there.

At the seminar, Hoang Duc Nhuan, Vietnam’s Trade Counselor in Algeria, delivered a presentation on the current state of Vietnam’s economy and foreign trade. Nhuan also reviewed the growing bilateral trade relations, pointing to figures from Vietnam Customs that reported a trade volume of approximately 220 million USD in 2024. Key Vietnamese exports to Algeria include raw coffee, pepper, cashew nuts, desiccated coconut, aquatic products, and chemicals, while imports from Algeria primarily consist of carob powder, pharmaceuticals, ores, recycled paper, animal feed, and chicken feet.

In terms of investment, the Vietnam-Algeria partnership has seen success in the oil and gas sector, with the joint venture between Vietnam’s PetroVietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP), Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production, and Algeria’s Sonatrach running the Bir Seba oil field in Ouargla province since 2015. This venture currently produces 16,000 to 18,000 barrels of oil per day.

As part of the effort to foster deeper ties, the Vietnam Trade Office also showcased several major international trade events scheduled for 2025, including the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival in March, the Vietnam Expo in April and December, the Vietnam International Sourcing Expo in September, and the Vietnam Food Expo in November. Algerian businesses and governmental agencies were encouraged to participate in these events to further strengthen bilateral collaboration.

At the conclusion of the seminar, Algerian enterprises expressed interest in importing a variety of Vietnamese products, such as raw coffee, spices, rice, cashew nuts, sugar, plastic raw materials, and sports goods. They also explored potential export opportunities, including olive oil, dates, dairy products, margarine, and carpets, while discussing possible partnerships in the textile, agricultural processing, refrigeration, logistics, and tourism sectors.
