Norway Boosts Financial Support to Ukraine with €4.3 Billion

by Ivy

Norway’s Parliament has approved a significant increase in its financial support to Ukraine, more than doubling the initial allocation for 2025. With the United States reducing its aid to Kyiv, Norway’s enhanced contribution underscores the country’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.

Initially, Norway’s 2025 state budget allocated 35 billion Norwegian kroner (€2.98 billion) to Ukraine. However, following a decision made on Thursday, an additional 50 billion kroner (€4.3 billion) will be provided, bringing the total to 85 billion kroner (€7.24 billion) for the year.

Leaders across all political parties in Norway expressed unwavering support for the substantial increase in funding, reflecting a broad consensus in Parliament. From the right-wing Progress Party to the left-wing Socialist and Red parties, all political factions have come together to back Ukraine.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Labour Party) emphasized the importance of this decision, stating, “We are increasing the support because there is a need.” He further highlighted the gravity of the situation, stressing that this was the most serious security challenge Norway has faced since World War II. “This is a solid Norwegian contribution to peace and stability in Ukraine and in Europe,” he added.

Ine Eriksen Søreide, head of the Standing Committee of Defense and Foreign Affairs and a member of the Conservative Party, underscored the possibility of further support, noting, “There might be a need for even more. It is important that we all stand together on this.”

With Thursday’s decision, Norway’s total financial commitment to Ukraine from now until 2030 will rise to 205 billion kroner (€17.5 billion). This long-term support reflects Norway’s continued dedication to Ukraine’s defense and regional stability.

Jens Stoltenberg, the former NATO Secretary-General and current Norwegian Minister of Finance, also supported the decision, stating, “It is important for Ukraine’s defense, and it is important for our own security. The money will go entirely to international initiatives and purchases from the Ukrainian defense industry.”

Norway, which manages the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund worth nearly 20,000 billion kroner (€1.7 trillion), has positioned itself as a leading contributor to Ukraine’s defense efforts.

The announcement comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the U.S. is suspending military and other aid to Ukraine. Meanwhile, in Brussels, EU leaders met for an emergency European Council summit, which was attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Discussions centered on how to increase military support to Ukraine and rearm Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also proposed an €800 billion plan to boost defense spending across the continent.
