Success in business isn’t solely about outshining the competition—it’s also about building meaningful collaborations. For many small business leaders, professional networks go beyond simple connections; they serve as invaluable resources for growth, guidance, and uncovering new opportunities.
New research from American Express reveals the significant role that peer support plays in the success of small businesses. An overwhelming 94% of small business owners acknowledge the importance of supporting fellow entrepreneurs, and more than half (54%) state that their professional networks have directly helped them unlock new business opportunities.
The Importance of Peer Support
The research highlights that small business owners depend on their networks for more than just industry knowledge. When asked about the most valuable support they receive, product and service recommendations topped the list, with 40% of respondents valuing them most. Emotional support and business or financial advice followed, with 33% and 32% of small business leaders, respectively, finding these aspects most beneficial.
This reliance on trusted peers is rooted in the efficiency and quality assurance that comes from personal recommendations. Nearly 71% of small business leaders trust peer referrals, and 48% report that such recommendations save them valuable time and effort in sourcing the right products and services.
The Power of Trusted Referrals
Word-of-mouth has long been a cornerstone of business success, and this research underscores its enduring significance. Many small business leaders will only endorse products or services they have personally had positive experiences with, making peer referrals a crucial tool for informed decision-making.
Lee Sullivan, Vice President at American Express, emphasizes this point: “Strong business networks drive growth—whether that’s through trusted referrals, recommendations, or everyday advice.”
Fostering Collaboration Through Incentives
In an effort to further encourage small business networking, American Express has introduced a new referral program. Business Platinum and Gold Cardmembers can now earn Membership Rewards® points by referring fellow small business owners, reinforcing the notion that collaboration is key to success.
In a business environment often characterized by intense competition, these findings reveal a different truth—one where collaboration, trust, and the exchange of knowledge are essential to long-term growth. For small business leaders, the power of their networks is not merely a luxury but a vital element in achieving sustained success.
