HP Unveils World’s First Quantum-Resistant Business Printers to Safeguard Against Future Cyber Threats

by Ivy

PALO ALTO, CA — HP Inc. has launched a groundbreaking series of business printers designed to defend against emerging threats posed by quantum computers. The new 8000 Series printers incorporate cutting-edge, quantum-resistant cryptography to protect digital assets from future cyberattacks that could exploit vulnerabilities in current encryption methods.

The new models, including the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP 8801, Mono MFP 8601, and LaserJet Pro Mono SFP 8501, are equipped with application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips designed with quantum resilience. These chips provide robust protection to critical early-stage BIOS and boot firmware, preventing malicious updates that could potentially compromise device control. The announcement underscores HP’s commitment to ensuring the integrity of digital devices in an age where quantum computing poses increasing risks.

According to Steve Inch, Global Senior Print Security Strategist at HP, these printers are specifically designed to align with Zero Trust security frameworks. This allows businesses to integrate the printers into broader cybersecurity strategies, ensuring a unified approach to defense against both current and future threats. “Our quantum-resistant technology ensures that businesses can continue to operate securely and confidently, even in the face of emerging quantum threats,” Inch stated in the company’s blog post.

The move comes at a critical juncture, as experts warn that quantum computers could soon be capable of breaking the encryption methods that safeguard much of today’s digital infrastructure. HP’s announcement is timely, given that the U.S. government has set a 2027 deadline for National Security Systems to implement quantum-resistant cryptography for code signing, further highlighting the urgency for businesses to upgrade their IT infrastructure in anticipation of this shift.

HP’s quantum security efforts are not confined to printers alone. Last year, the company introduced business PCs with similar quantum-resistant firmware protections, reinforcing its dedication to fortifying its entire product lineup against next-generation threats.

For businesses operating under long-term print service agreements, HP advises that the time to act is now. The upcoming U.S. government timeline for migrating to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2030 makes it imperative for organizations to factor in quantum resilience when making their next print technology purchase. By doing so, businesses can enhance security and safeguard the integrity of their printing infrastructure for years to come.
