A recent study commissioned by Wasabi Technologies highlights the growing concern among European business leaders about the potential fallout from disclosing their companies’ emissions data. According to the findings of the 2025 Emissions Blindspots Report, nearly half (47%) of European businesses are reluctant to fully assess the extent of their carbon footprint, with 61% fearing public backlash if their emissions are deemed too high. Despite the growing demand from customers and the public for transparency in emissions reporting, more than half (51%) of businesses worry that revealing their emissions data will lead to customer loss.
The research, conducted among 1,200 business decision-makers across the UK, France, and Germany, sheds light on the complexities of reporting emissions from technology infrastructure. As companies face increasing scrutiny from both regulators and consumers, the findings underscore the challenges businesses face in accurately calculating and reporting Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions from the tech stack and value chain.
Key Findings from the Report:
Inaccuracy Stifles Innovation: 77% of companies believe that inaccurate emissions data is a barrier to innovation. The lack of clear and trustworthy sustainability data leads to delayed investments in new technologies and hinders the ability to make informed decisions about adopting sustainable solutions.
Tech Vendors Under Scrutiny: Nearly half of businesses (44%) report a lack of trust in the emissions data provided by their technology vendors. The survey also revealed that 39% of businesses struggle internally with resource constraints, preventing them from accurately capturing and analyzing emissions data.
Pressure on Tech Providers: With 50% of businesses indicating they would not engage with vendors who cannot demonstrate accurate emissions reporting, the findings call for technology providers to take greater responsibility in delivering trustworthy data on their environmental impact.
Kevin Dunn, VP & GM EMEA at Wasabi Technologies, commented, “While we’ve seen progress in emissions reporting, businesses still face significant challenges in obtaining accurate data from their tech vendors. The pressure is on companies to hold themselves and their partners accountable to ensure transparency and improve sustainability.”
Emissions Reporting and Its Impact on Business: The report also revealed that the absence of accurate emissions data can delay the adoption of new technology, as nearly a third of organizations (32%) have already reported delays in investment due to uncertainties regarding the environmental impact of their tech stack.
The report concludes that businesses are now under increasing pressure not only to comply with sustainability regulations but also to meet consumer expectations for transparency. As companies navigate these challenges, the role of accurate and accessible emissions data has never been more crucial to both innovation and maintaining public trust.
