Three First Nations businesses in Geelong are set for further success after receiving state government grants through a $3 million program aimed at boosting Indigenous entrepreneurship.
Blak Brews, founded by Geelong’s Troy and Cerisa Benjamin, has rapidly grown since its launch in 2023. Specializing in ethically sourced native ingredients for its tea and coffee offerings, Blak Brews won the 2023 Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars Australia, securing a $250,000 prize and a year of mentorship from the renowned chef. The win propelled the business into a new level of demand, leading the Benjamins to focus on scaling up their operations.
“Cash is king when you’re talking startups,” said Troy Benjamin. “Being able to expand and increase our buying power means we can purchase in bulk, lowering costs and driving profits back into the business.”
Despite their rapid growth, the business has faced challenges due to cash flow. “Since we won Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars, we’ve been thrust into a different level of demand, but urgent needs are often put on hold due to cash flow. You have to spend money to make money.”
Blak Brews, along with Wanyaari Aboriginal Consultancy Services and AH Plumbing Services, received grants through the Victorian Aboriginal Business Investment Program. Blak Brews and Wanyaari each secured up to $10,000 for training, mentorship, marketing, and expert advisory services. Meanwhile, AH Plumbing was one of 20 businesses statewide to receive up to $100,000 in support.
Victorian Minister for Small Business and Employment Natalie Suleyman emphasized the importance of backing Indigenous businesses. “Supporting Aboriginal businesses isn’t just about economic opportunity, it’s about empowering communities, creating sustainable jobs, and working toward economic equality within a generation,” said Minister Suleyman.
Christine Couzens, Member for Geelong, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the vital role these grants play in driving regional growth. “These grants help innovative First Nations businesses expand, providing more jobs and supporting economic development in regional Victoria.”
