Apple Developing AI-Driven Health Coach for Mobile Devices

by Celia

Apple is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence-powered health coach, designed to integrate with its mobile devices such as the iPhone and Apple Watch. The initiative, known as “Project Mulberry,” aims to offer users personalized advice on nutrition and exercise, leveraging data collected through Apple’s Health app and wearable devices, including the Apple Watch.

The news, reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, suggests that the AI service could be available to consumers as early as next year, possibly coinciding with a future iOS update. Apple has yet to respond to requests for comment on the project.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has long hinted at the company’s interest in expanding its focus on health technologies, and this initiative appears to be a significant step in that direction. While the project’s precise goals remain unclear, it is uncertain whether the AI service will function as a tool for medical diagnoses or serve primarily as a wellness advisor.

Gurman’s report indicates that the AI health coach will be trained using physician data and may incorporate insights from health experts to provide comprehensive health guidance. This AI-driven service could also serve as a key component of Apple’s broader health ecosystem, potentially branded as “Health Plus,” becoming another cornerstone of its growing services business.

There is significant potential in using AI for health applications, particularly in preventive care and risk assessment, as highlighted by organizations like the Mayo Clinic. However, concerns about the risks of integrating AI into healthcare remain. A December report by the healthcare research nonprofit ECRI identified AI as a leading hazard for the healthcare industry in 2025. While acknowledging AI’s transformative potential, the report warned of dangers such as inaccurate AI responses and malfunctioning products, which could pose significant risks to patients and the industry as a whole.
