A resilient young woman confronting the challenges of her mental health journey has credited her triumph in establishing a dog-walking and pet-sitting business to the unwavering support provided by her local council.
Chloe Holmes, a 20-year-old entrepreneur hailing from Shepton Mallet, candidly shared her experience of grappling with depression and anxiety. Her compelling narrative underscores the pivotal role played by Somerset Council’s supported-employment service, a lifeline that facilitated her entrepreneurial venture.
Chloe’s remarkable journey was set in motion when her mother recognized the potential of the council’s support system. Amidst apprehensions of the daunting prospect of securing employment while contending with her mental health challenges, Chloe Holmes embarked on the path to self-employment.
The recently introduced strategy, implemented in July as a component of a cost-saving initiative amounting to £14 million, encompasses adult social care. It prioritizes endeavors aimed at preventing hospitalization or residential care. A key facet of this initiative involves nurturing the potential for independent living and fostering careers, particularly among individuals of working age.
Mel Lock, the Director of Adult Services in Somerset, elaborated, “Our focus is on empowering people to build fulfilling careers. We work in close collaboration with organizations like Discovery, which provide invaluable job-coaching assistance.”
Chloe, reflecting on her transformative journey, affirmed that the support she received over the past year has been instrumental in her ability to manage employment while effectively navigating other aspects of her life. She acknowledged the practical challenges she faced during her transition from academic to professional pursuits and underscored the disparity between theoretical knowledge gained in school and its practical application.
The guiding presence of Chloe’s mother, Emma, also featured prominently in her journey. The pivotal period marked by Chloe’s transition from adolescence to adulthood prompted Emma to ensure that her daughter’s mental health was safeguarded. While Emma remains a steadfast pillar of support, she acknowledged the limitations of her role in Chloe’s ongoing journey toward independence.
Chloe’s story serves as an inspiring testament to the potential for collaboration between individuals, local councils, and the broader community to foster resilience and empowerment amid mental health struggles.
