A residence in southern Sydney was sealed off and three individuals were transported to the hospital after the detection of radioactive material within the premises.
In Arncliffe, the dwelling remained cordoned off for several hours, marked by cautionary tape warning of potential toxic, nuclear, or biological hazards inside. In collaboration with fire crews, Australian Border Force (ABF) officials initiated an operation in response to the concerning discovery.
Fire and Rescue New South Wales subsequently confirmed the identification of “low-level radioactive isotopes.” The found material was securely contained and demonstrated no radiation release, as verified by the brigade in a statement.
Following meticulous assessment, the material was further sealed without incident. As a precautionary measure, three occupants of the affected address were admitted to the hospital for observation, although their condition was reported as stable.
Nearby residents were temporarily evacuated to ensure safety but have since been permitted to return to their homes on Kelsey Street.
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) conducted supplementary testing, substantiating the absence of exposure evidence.
Initial reports from local broadcaster Channel 10 had suggested the discovery of mercury and a uranium isotope, although these specifics were not confirmed by either the ABF or the fire service.
Photographs from the scene portrayed a small brown-brick apartment building cordoned off by red and yellow tape, signaling a “Contaminated area – do not enter – hot zone.”
The community response was a mix of concern and surprise. Sam Abraham, aged 19, encountered the road closure while attempting to return home. He expressed, “It’s unsettling to find uranium in your neighbor’s house. This isn’t something we typically encounter in Arncliffe.”
Similarly, Nemr Khamis, aged 60, recounted his experience upon noticing the emergency response: “I saw the ambulance and the fire brigade. I had a baby with me, and the police instructed me to remain indoors.” Khamis proceeded to alert relatives about the situation, who confirmed the presence of uranium in the vicinity.
