Prominent technology companies and search engines are now compelled to adhere to newly established regulations within the European Union (EU) aimed at safeguarding users’ interests.
Enforced through the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), these regulations entail substantial penalties for those found in violation.
Nineteen major platforms, including well-known entities such as Facebook and TikTok, are subject to the most rigorous guidelines under the DSA. These guidelines encompass the implementation of strategies to shield children from harm and to thwart any attempts at election interference.
Significant modifications have been instituted across several platforms, some of which will have implications for users in the United Kingdom.
While the UK’s Online Safety Bill remains under parliamentary review, the EU’s Digital Services Act was officially enacted on November 16, 2022.
Companies were afforded a grace period to ensure alignment of their systems with the newly established regulations.
