X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced a revision to its privacy policy that includes the collection of biometric data from its users, specifically facial photographs, as part of its new features.
Users who opt for X Premium, the subscription service provided by X, will have the option to provide a selfie and photo identification for verification purposes. In addition to biometric data, the updated policy indicates that X may also collect information related to employment and educational history.
The primary objective behind the collection of this data is to offer personalized job recommendations and facilitate the sharing of relevant information with potential employers during the job application process. Speculation has arisen regarding X’s potential interest in venturing into the recruitment services industry, particularly following its acquisition of Laskie, a tech recruiting service, in May. This acquisition, occurring after Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter last year for $44 billion (£34.7 billion), marked the company’s first major takeover.
The revised privacy policy is scheduled to take effect on September 29th. It explicitly states that X may gather and utilize personal information, such as employment history, educational background, employment preferences, skills and abilities, and job search activity, to suggest suitable job opportunities, help employers identify potential candidates, and provide users with more relevant advertising. Notably, the collection of biometric data will be applicable solely to X Premium users.
