The Tesla Cybertruck has something called “Wade Mode”, which the automaker claims “pressurises the battery pack” to “drive through water”.
It looks like Tesla is actually delivering on its promise that the pickup can drive through water, at least to some extent.
Elon Musk has made claims before about Tesla vehicles being able to float and briefly act as a boat.
They were never taken too seriously because Tesla’s warranty says something else about taking the car in the water.
But the CEO doubled down on the claim with the Cybertruck – which makes more sense as it is supposed to be an off-road vehicle.
The CEO added that the goal is for a Cybertruck to be able to cross the water between SpaceX’s Starbase and South Padre Island in Texas, which is about 360 metres.
Now that Tesla has started delivering the Cybertruck, it looks like it wasn’t just words about the pickup being able to drive through water.
This is an interesting and surprising feature. Tesla’s battery packs are generally sealed and can withstand water for a short time, but now Tesla apparently has the ability to pressurise the battery pack, which should also help keep the water out.
But let’s wait and see what the warranty says before we put the car through the water.
