Tesla’s Chief Designer, Franz von Holzhausen, asserted that the distinctive and polarizing design of the Cybertruck serves as a conversation starter, contributing to the enhancement of the Tesla brand. Speaking at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, von Holzhausen emphasized that the Cybertruck, despite its unique appearance, is not an experiment but a strategic move.
“Love it or hate it, it’s a conversation starter, and it gets people talking about the brand,” said von Holzhausen during the addition of Cybertruck models to a Tesla exhibit at the museum.
The long-anticipated Cybertruck, with its angular stainless-steel clad design, has faced delays and a price increase, starting at $60,990. Despite these challenges, von Holzhausen noted that the vehicle is drawing interest from individuals who have never owned a truck before. Some potential buyers are reportedly waiting in queues at Tesla showrooms.
“Just because it looks different doesn’t mean that it can’t be potentially a high volume vehicle,” von Holzhausen commented, highlighting the Cybertruck’s performance capabilities compared to traditional rivals. He emphasized that the Cybertruck is bringing new customers into the market who might not have considered owning a truck before.
The Cybertruck’s design, with its angular and unconventional appearance, was inspired by the limitations of traditional steel presses, the Lamborghini Countach, and Lockheed’s F-117 Stealth Fighter jet. Von Holzhausen acknowledged that the Cybertruck’s design may seem unconventional but emphasized that it matches up to its performance.
Despite some glitches during its launch, including shattered windows during a demonstration, von Holzhausen defended the Cybertruck, stating that his kids enjoy being picked up from school in it, and he has even been mistaken for Tesla CEO Elon Musk while driving the vehicle.
