Charity offers help to combat loneliness during the festive season

by Celia

As the festive season approaches, the Wiltshire department of Rethink Mental Illness charity is extending a helping hand to those grappling with mental health challenges. The charity is operating a helpline staffed by trained volunteers to provide assistance in managing issues such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and abuse.

A recent survey conducted by the charity, encompassing over 1,000 individuals nationwide, revealed that 77% of respondents feel isolated during Christmas, even when surrounded by family. Jonathan Baker, a digital officer at Rethink Mental Illness Wiltshire, emphasized, “If you’re already lonely or isolated due to your mental health, it can put a huge spotlight on that and cause a lot of issues.”

The survey findings further unveiled that 88% of participants feel pressured to put on a facade or enjoy Christmas. Acknowledging the heightened challenges faced during the holiday season, Rethink Mental Illness is introducing a free, confidential text message support service, complementing the existing helpline.

Wiltshire Council and the Wiltshire Commissioning Group are providing funding for these crucial mental health support initiatives. Ian Blair-Pilling, cabinet member for Public Health at Wiltshire Council, encouraged individuals facing difficulties to reach out, stating, “Our support services won’t judge and are there to help everyone.”
