SAN FRANCISCO — A See’s Candies store situated in the Embarcadero Center in Downtown San Francisco concluded its last day of operations on Sunday, according to a statement from an employee at the store.
In response to the closure, employees from the Embarcadero Center location are set to transition to the nearby See’s Candies store at 542 Market St. Despite the closure, three See’s Candies outlets remain in operation in San Francisco. These include a store at 754 Clement St. in the Richmond District and another at the Stonestown Galleria mall. Additionally, the company runs a holiday pop-up location at the Fairmont Hotel.
See’s Candies has not provided a statement or comment regarding the reason behind the closure of the Embarcadero Center store.
The Embarcadero Center faces broader challenges related to vacancies, reflecting the evolving work patterns in Downtown San Francisco influenced by the pandemic. The Financial District has witnessed the closure of numerous retail businesses due to significant declines in foot traffic.
Earlier this year, Banana Republic shuttered its Embarcadero Center location, part of a larger retrenchment by its parent company, Gap Inc.
Efforts to revitalize vacant spaces in the Embarcadero Center include the city-funded Vacant to Vibrant program, which transforms empty spaces into temporary pop-up retail locations.
See’s Candies, a California institution renowned for its diverse confections, especially popular as holiday gifts, originated from a single store in Los Angeles in 1921. Since then, it has expanded to over 200 locations nationwide. The company’s headquarters are situated in South San Francisco, and it is under the ownership of Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate led by billionaire investor Warren Buffett.
