“Becoming an Advanced Practice Lead (APL) has proven to be the most rewarding career decision I have made as a psychologist,” expressed Dr. Susan Jerrott, reflecting on her role within the Mental Health and Addictions Program’s Provincial Centre for Education, Training and Learning (PCTEL).
In the Mental Health and Addictions Program, professionals like Dr. Jerrott, serving as APLs, play a distinctive role, fostering collaborative practice, offering leadership, and influencing program development.
“Our purpose is to construct bridges, providing training and consultation to clinicians and staff,” Dr. Jerrott explained, underscoring the human element in her work.
With three years as an APL at Nova Scotia Health following a 21-year tenure at IWK Health, Dr. Jerrott’s story transcends mere job titles.
“I’ve been part of different teams at IWK Health, from Community Mental Health and Addictions, Day Treatment, and the Mood Disorders Service,” she reflected, capturing the depth of her experience.
Specializing in areas such as evidence-based assessments and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dr. Jerrott doesn’t just bring expertise; she adds a personal touch.
“I’m passionate about staying current and tailoring my training based on feedback,” she shared, injecting a sense of continuous improvement into her work. Yet, it’s not solely about the training sessions. In her own words, Dr. Jerrott painted a picture of her dedication,
“I love the ability to interact with the clinicians who participate in training. The thoughtful questions, the helpful exchanges—they all inspire me. It’s about providing the highest quality of care to the individuals they work with, and that’s what keeps me going.”

“The feeling of continual improvement really energizes me and keeps me excited in the role,” Dr. Jerrott concluded.
